Catastrophic injury may or may not reduce life expectancy and an expert opinion should be obtained. It is important to select an expert who is knowledgeable about the intricacies of estimating life expectancy. A very general rule of thumb, not to be relied on if there is any suggestion of uncertainty, is that brain injury on its own may not reduce life expectancy, paraplegia may do so only very slightly, and tetraplegia by not as much as people previously believed.
